Gateway Wheelers Visit

We were delighted to invite Lucy Palfreyman from Sport England to visit Gateway Wheelers recently. Gateway Wheelers is a dedicated cycling club catering to adults and children with disabilities, which boasts an impressive fleet of approximately 50 specialized cycles, ranging from side-by-side to adapted tricycles and wheelchair bikes, ensuring inclusivity for all.

We funded the project from the Sport England Together Fund and were keen to see the benefits that the funding has resulted in.

Lucy gave the project some excellent feedback, “In my recent visit to Gateway Wheelers, I witnessed the transformative impact of the Together Fund Project. They have harnessed the funding to provide a safe haven for those facing barriers to cycling.

“From conversations with the volunteers, participants, and carers, it is clear to see this project has made a remarkable difference, and not only increased physical activity but also aided the organisation's survival during challenging times post-pandemic.

“The funding has ensured the provision of free sessions, staff retention and bike maintenance. Participants have not only gained cycling skills and confidence but also improved mental health through regular social interactions.

“This initiative has proven particularly vital in the North East region where disability cycling provisions are limited.

“Looking towards the future, it is great to see Gateway Wheelers carving out an advocacy role within the local landscape, by influencing local authorities and actively championing a shift in the perception of active travel, cycling, and disability.”

As well as providing funding to the club, we have also met with them to provide assistance and advice regarding improving their governance and administration.

In granting their funding request, Sport England also asked us to look at their longer term sustainability needs and help with their development. As a result there is a sense that they are building momentum. They have begun work with the local authoity to develop and upgrade their outdoor facilities and are likely to be a key player in the regional Inclusive/Adaptive Cycling structure that Rise are currently working on with partners.
